Flexible Work Schedules
Having a job that allows you to take an hour here and there to keep-up with events in your life is pretty desireable. You can go to your child's soccer game or meet the cable installer for an appointment.
In the semiconductor design field, many companies are quite generous with regards to "flex time" or flexible working hours. It's not uncommon for people in the California area, who deal with massive amount of traffic at rush hours, to shift their schedule so they work 10:00am until 7:00pm to avoid the main problem times. Other people prefer arriving early and leaving early so they can enjoy longer evenings with their families and friends.
Many companies also employees to leave for dentist appointments or to attend their children's school events without much hassle. This can be very important to employees with families and is generally ranked very high on the list of desired benefits.
Of course, not all companies are completely flexible, but usually when you're working in a professional environment, as long as your work gets completed and you're available when needed for meetings and such, ducking out of the building for a bit won't be a problem.
